McDonald's has removed a holiday advert produced using Artificial Intelligence after encountering significant online backlash.

The short spot was created with the help of AI-generated video and was originally released publicly for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Viewer Response and Removal

Following its publication, commenters denounced the employment of AI in the advert. A number of called it "uncanny" and "jarringly assembled".

"This incident represents an valuable learning as we explore the appropriate utilization of generative technology," stated a representative from the company.

The commercial was produced for McDonald's by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of things that might go awry during the holidays, with the slogan "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI Commercials

Adverts that incorporate AI tools have become a growing trend among prominent brands, notably for the Christmas campaign season.

  • Coca-Cola has also launched consecutive AI-generated Christmas commercials.
  • Inherent Limitations: Since segments created with current AI video tools are more likely to become unstable the longer they run, most such clips tend to be roughly a few seconds in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The ad also raised fears about automation in the production sector, with some observers pointing out it might reduce work for camera crews.

Response from the Creators

After the video's removal, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.

She stated, the production process required "seven weeks" and involved generating "thousands of takes" which were then edited during the edit "in the same way we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't just an experiment," Bridge asserted. "It was a proper commercial."

Mixed Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was mostly panned, the response for some AI-generated holiday ads has been divisive.

For instance, a recent AI-generated holiday ad from another major brand reportedly garnered a 61% "favorable response" from the public.

However, several companies have likewise received scrutiny for using the technique in advertising. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that some called "cheap" and "disturbing".

The incident illustrates the evolving debate within the advertising and creative industries about the trade-off between new tools and audience reception.
