European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

  • The nation of Palau has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
