Combined Anglo-French Airstrike Strikes IS Munitions Store in the Syrian region
British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages down to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.
British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."
In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" against IS targets in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
